Instagram hiding your messages? Here is where they go.
If a customer says they messaged you and you never saw it, the message is usually still there. Instagram sorts direct messages into more than one place, and some of those places never send you a notification.
Why you did not see the message
A first message from someone who does not follow you goes to Requests, not to your main chats.
Messages that Instagram’s filters catch go to a separate folder inside Requests, and that folder sends no notification.
On a professional account, accepted chats are split again into Primary and General, so a conversation can sit in General without you noticing.
Where to look, in order
- Open Messages and tap Requests at the top of the list.
- Inside Requests, open the filtered folder. Current versions of the app call it Spam; some older versions call it Hidden requests. It is only in the phone app.
- On a professional account, check the General tab as well as Primary.
- If a chat seems to have vanished, search for the sender’s username in Messages. Old conversations sink far down the list.
Settings that send messages away from your inbox
Hidden Words (Settings, then How others can interact with you, then Hidden Words) filters message requests that contain words on its list into the hidden folder. Check both the automatic filter and your own word list.
Message controls, in the same settings area, decide whether people you do not know can reach your Requests at all.
Limits and Restrict also move messages out of your main inbox. If you turned either on during a busy week, check whether they are still on.
Menu names change often. These were checked in October 2026.
Why a missed message costs more than it looks
86% of consumers say they are more likely to buy from brands that answer them on social, and 3 in 4 expect a reply within 24 hours. A question found a week late is usually a sale that went somewhere else.
Where Ruby helps
Finding a message is the first problem. The second is noticing the one that matters: "How much is this?" sitting under 200 compliments.
Ruby analyzes the messages and comments on the account you connect and puts buyers, brand offers, complaints and superfans first, each with the reason it was picked. It can draft a reply in your voice, or send the routine answers for you, like the link someone asked for.
When you connect, Ruby looks back over your last 90 days and shows you who to answer first. Start free, with no card.
